Simulation of tangential slot vortex intake by OpenFOAM. It has the advantages of good energy dissipation, stable air core in drop shaft and compact design.
This design was found to overflow at 85% of design flow, so the taper design was modified subsequently and results were satisfactory.
Simulation is carried out under the following conditions.
- Design flow = 11.2m3/s (85% of design flow)
- Width of approach channel = 2.5m
- Diameter of drop shaft = 1.86m
- Length of drop shaft = 18m
- Width of slot opening = 0.42m
- Bottom slope of taper = 1:2
